The Faith of a Sunflower

Have you ever wondered how sunflowers got their name? Firstly (and correctly), you would most likely think that it is due to their shape and color. But something not as well known is that, when young, sunflowers actually physically follow the sun throughout the day.

This phenomenon is called heliotropism.

In the morning, young sunflowers turn their faces towards the sun and slowly move them with it from East to West as the day progresses. Then, in the evenings, when all turns dark, the flowers turn back to their original position, awaiting the next day's golden rays.

Now, let me ask you a question: Do you tend to seek God more when times are good, or when times are bad? Do you tend to seek God more when the day is bright and warm, or when the night is dark and cold?

I think that, for most of us, it’s easier to ‘set God aside’ when times are good and come running to Him the minute that things take a bad turn.

However, 1 Chronicles 16:11 (NIV) says “Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.”

It is truly so important it is to seek His face every day. Whether that means praying over the decisions that you make, choosing to speak to new people at your church, or reading your Bible daily, know that time devoted to pursuing Him will never be time ill-spent.

Reader, I encourage you to keep your eyes turned towards Him through all of the good times, never forgetting the blessings that you have. And I also encourage you to go through your hard times trusting that He is good, and that things will brighten again with the shining rays of His morning.

I encourage you to have the faith of a sunflower.

Note: This post was inspired by a sermon that I heard.
