I am sure that you have probably heard something along these lines before: ‘The story was strung together well’. And, for me, writing really does feel like I’m stringing something together.
Apart from reading and writing and playing violin, one of my favorite hobbies is jewelry making. Over time, I have found that writing a book is actually a lot like putting beads on a necklace. Here are a few comparisons:
You have to have a certain amount of beads to make the necklace long enough just as you need a certain amount of words to make a novel.
You don’t want a necklace that is mostly string and hardly any beads just as you don’t want a book that is simply meaningless, filler writing.
You sometimes have to take beads or whole sections of beads off the necklace just as you sometimes need to delete or rewrite scenes in your story.
Once you make your necklace, it is worn and, once you finish your tale, it is read.
Writing is slow, tedious and important work, but you have freedom in how you use it, how you string your words.
I string my story for Him.
I love this comparison. A good book is kinda like beautiful jewelry, isn't it? And I found it so encouraging when you said, "Writing is slow, tedious and important work". Writing is hard sometimes, but thanks for the reminder that it is, after all, important work.
These are such good comparisons, Molly!
