Loosing Control And Finding It (sci-fi flash fiction)

Vrmmmm.

I speed around the space center’s outer corner, cutting the bend close and picking up momentum.  I spare a glance to my mirror and see that there’s someone right on my tail.  The thrill of ship racing never gets old, and that trophy is mine.

As I jam my foot into the gas pedal once more, an abrupt warning goes off near my head.  Red lights flash all through my ship and, distracted, I slow down and catch a blur of blue as another ship passes my own.

I’d gone too fast again.  The mechanic warned me.

The next thing I know, my vehicle is losing altitude and I’m watching through the window as I descend to the ground, all hopes of a first place trophy leaving my mind.

Frantically, I press the big, yellow button that I’ve never used before and am ejected from my seat, shooting out in the air and gently floating to the ground - thanks to the help of my suit.  From a distance, I watch as my ship falls into rocks.

Please, someone help!  I stomp my feet for attention, sending dust flying everywhere, and wince as another ship whizzes by overhead. With the race going on, I won’t be found for a while.  And with the vehicles flying so close, I might not make it until I am.

I feel tears on my cheeks.  If I hadn’t been so reckless…

Hearing a noise, I turn around.  A large, white ship lands on the ground a mere few feet away, and the side door opens.  What are they doing down here?  If this driver is stopping for me, they must not be interested in winning anymore either.

But when I climb into the passenger seat, I’m greeted by who I know is the Pilot.  His eyes shine with unexplainable love and I feel as if I’ll cry again.  This Man, who could have easily taken first place with His perfect ship, was choosing to save me instead.

Instead, I smile at Him, joyful and at peace.  In losing control, I found it.
