Imagine that you have a bag of coins. Every day, you get to spend a certain amount, but you aren’t allowed to ever look into the bag and see how many you have left. The only information you get on the remainder, is that it will eventually run out. Knowing this, you would spend these coins wisely, right? Now, what if I told you that these ‘coins’ were time and the bag is your life…
Let me ask you a question: what are you buying with your coins? Where are you spending them? Firstly, let’s answer the what question. Are you choosing to spend your coins on things that glorify the Lord? There are certainly plenty of bad things you could be using them for, but what if what you’re buying doesn’t really seem like anything you shouldn’t be. For example, you hang out with friends in your free-time. There’s nothing wrong with being with friends, but, if we switch to the where question, it changes. What store are you buying that time with friends from? If the person or people you spend your coins on isn’t building you up and helping you grow in faith, even if you aren’t doing bad things with them, if that a good choice of purchase?
1 Thessalonians 5:2 “For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.”
We don’t know when he will come or when our coins will run out, so we should use them wisely. At the end of the day, when you look at your ‘receipt’, what did you spend the most on? One thing I personally get convicted of, is reading. I love to read, and reading isn’t a bad thing at all, but when I look at how much time I spend reading things that I want to versus reading the bible… the ratio isn’t what I want it to be.
Something to take into consideration, is that God doesn’t tell you what you can or can’t buy. Other than the amount you get each day, there aren’t regulations. You are free to spend them wherever you want. This is where it gets personal to you. Are you happy with what you spend your coins on? Do you feel like you are giving God enough time?
That’s so good! Recently, my family and I have been thinking about how we need to be doing more to tell people about Jesus, because time IS running out.
